On behalf of Vancouver Island West School District 84, we wish to welcome you to our District! We hope you will enjoy your time here, and experience the many wonderful opportunities that our District has to offer, both inside and outside the classroom.
In our District, you will find many opportunities to become an integral member of the community. We value employees who enjoy a remote and rural lifestyle and who are dedicated to making a difference in our students, our schools, and our communities.
Our schools provide the support and learning opportunities that enable our students to have the skills and capacity to succeed as students and to pursue their career plans. Many of our classes are multi-grade and represent a diversity of student needs. The Board and the District make a priority of placing resources and services at the school level.
As a new employee to the District, your supervisor will provide you with an orientation to your worksite and will be there to support and guide you as you become accustomed to your new job and location. Please feel comfortable to seek the help of your supervisor and your colleagues at any time.
The staff members in the School Board Office are very helpful and will point you in the right direction if you have any questions about your employment, housing, reimbursements, benefits, etc. Please feel free to contact us at 250-283-2241 during regular business hours or email us at hr@viw.sd84.bc.ca.
You will be provided with an SD84 e-mail address and will also be required to complete three online courses before your employment – WHMIS 2015, Bullying and Harassment Awareness, and Orientation of New Staff. Information will be provided.
As you settle into your role, we encourage you to take an active part in shaping a positive and supportive work environment for both yourself and your colleagues. Your ideas, enthusiasm, and dedication contribute not only to the success of our students but also to the overall health of our workplaces. Finding a healthy balance between professional responsibilities and personal life will become increasingly important as you grow more comfortable in your position, helping to support long-term well-being and sustained success.
Establishing routines, setting realistic boundaries, and taking time to recharge all contribute to sustained focus and job satisfaction. A supportive workplace thrives when individuals feel empowered to look after their well-being and to speak openly about challenges before they become overwhelming.
Accessing available benefits, wellness programs, and internal resources is encouraged, as these are in place to support you not only as an employee, but as a whole person navigating both work and life commitments.
Mental well-being is an essential component of this balance, and seeking support when needed is a sign of strength and self-awareness. From everyday stress to more persistent mental health concerns, early attention can make a meaningful difference in overall quality of life. For those who may require care beyond workplace resources, organizations such as Avesta Ketamine Wellness reflect the broader network of medically supervised mental health support available today.
We encourage all staff to remain attentive to their own needs, to use the benefits and supports accessible to them, and to foster a culture where care, understanding, and balance are shared priorities.
In addition to fostering a supportive and engaging work environment, the District is equally committed to maintaining accuracy and fairness in employee compensation. Clear and timely payroll practices ensure that every staff member’s hard work is properly recognized.
A timesheet calculator ensures work hours are recorded accurately, allowing payments to be processed with consistency and transparency. This attention to detail reflects our broader commitment to integrity, fairness, and respect for every employee’s contribution to the success of our schools and communities.
By sharing feedback, collaborating with your team, and embracing opportunities for growth, you play a key role in rebuilding company culture, ensuring that every new employee feels welcomed, valued, and empowered. Together, we can continue to foster an environment where learning, respect, and community thrive at every level of the District.
All the best!
