Freedom of Information (FOI) Requests
British Columbiaβs Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA)
enables the public to request and obtain copies of records held by public bodies when those records
are not routinely available.
Please note: This page is about Freedom of Information (FOI) requests. Questions about or requests
for student records should be directed to the student’s last school of record.
How to Submit an FOI Request
If you would like to request records from Vancouver Island West School District 84,
and those records are not publicly available without a request, you may submit a formal request
for records.
All formal requests must be submitted in writing and include sufficient detail to assist staff
in locating and retrieving the records requested.
When submitting your request, please:
- Clearly identify the specific record(s) you are seeking.
- Include specific dates and locations related to the records (if applicable).
- Provide sufficient and specific detail. Broad or complex requests, including requests for
βall records,β may take longer to process and may result in additional fees. - Do not submit duplicate requests for records that have already been requested and fulfilled.

Fees for Services Related to FOI Requests
In accordance with FOIPPA, access to personal information is provided free of charge.
For all other requests, a nonβrefundable $10 application fee is required.
Indigenous Governing Entities are not required to pay an application fee.
Requests will not be processed until payment of any applicable fees has been received.
Fee payments are accepted by cash, cheque, or eβtransfer to
sboadmin@viw.sd84.bc.ca.
Please note that additional processing fees may apply. Section 75 of FOIPPA permits the
school district to charge fees for certain costs associated with responding to FOI requests,
including:
- Locating, retrieving, and producing records
- Preparing records for disclosure
- Shipping and handling
- Providing copies of records
You will be notified of any additional costs once they have been determined.
